Yes, I know I look ridiculous. And I’m completely ok with that! Here’s why…
I’m eat well, and I get plenty of exercise, but there is one area where I consistently struggle, and that is sleep. I don’t get enough, and it’s not always the best quality.
Sleep is soooo important for our health. In fact, it’s one of the few things everyone in the health biz can agree on. People take different stands when it comes to meat, dairy, carbs, etc., but everyone agrees on the importance of sleep. Sleep helps our hormones stay balanced and boosts our immunity. Our cells and tissues are repaired during sleep. Sleep particularly affects the regulation of the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which affect our appetite. When we are sleep deprived, our ghrelin production goes up, which makes us hungrier than usual. I have noticed that when I am really tired I keep picking at food throughout the day.
There are many reasons why we don’t get enough sleep, and one of them is that we are so plugged in to our devices. That’s where my crazy orange goggles come in. Artificial light, and in particular the blue light that comes from our devices, affects the quality of our sleep by disrupting our natural circadian rhythms.
Since I am not quite ready to let go of my iPhone, iPad or Macbook in the evening, I wear my orange goggles. The orange cancels out the blue light. I have always fallen asleep pretty easily at night, but since wearing the goggles I have noticed that my overall sleep quality has improved and I am sleeping more soundly.
