How to Bounce Back from a Shitty Day
Let’s face it…we all have them. Learning how to bounce back is the hard part.
No matter how well we plan, and how hard we try to stay positive, we are human. And life happens.
So here are some ideas that my sister and I recently shared in a video on Instagram that we have both used in our own lives to bounce back from a shitty day. Because it’s so important to process your emotions so that you can move forward.
First, acknowledge that you are having a shitty day. It happens to the best of us. Don’t feel bad about feeling bad. It only compounds things.
When you have some space and privacy, allow yourself to feel the feelings. Rather than brushing them aside or trying to “fix” them, acknowledge what exactly you are feeling. Hurt? Scared? Angry? Frustrated?
Literally sit with your feelings and just FEEL them. For me the best way to do this is wrapped in a blanket on my sofa with my dogs and a giant mug of coffee.
Ok, now that you’ve felt them…it’s time to bounce back!
Journaling can be a great way to process your feelings. Write down what you are feeling and why. Just putting pen to paper can be very therapeutic.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…positive affirmations can be incredibly helpful. When dealing with a difficult situation, one of my favorites is “I am willing for this to be easier and more magical than I can imagine.” Or if I want to give myself a boost, something like “I am rich and in love.” You can repeat these out loud or in your head or write them out of paper. Whatever feels best to you.
Physical movement can literally help move the emotions through and out of your body. For me, walking is one of the best ways. No headphones, music or podcast. Just walking and listening to the sound of your own footsteps. Other movement like gardening or even vacuuming can be helpful as well. Figure out what works for you.
Once you feel like you have processed the emotions, music is a great way to lift your spirits so that you are no longer having a shitty day! Create your own good mood playlist and keep adding to it!
One final note…you don’t want to fall asleep to negative feelings, no matter how shitty your day way. Use visualization or guided meditation to fall asleep to something positive and uplifting since that’s what is going to be playing in your subconscious all night long. Learning how to bounce back from shitty days will transform your life before you know it.
