It’s that time of year…it’s finally getting warmer, and Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner.
A margarita sounds like a good idea.
Actually, who am I kidding? A margarita always sounds like a good idea!
I ran into my friend Ashley from Further Food when I was at Paleo f(x) in Austin last weekend and we started bouncing some ideas around.
It’s no secret that I enjoy a good cocktail, and with Cinco de Mayo right around the corner of course margaritas came to mind.
We were thinking that matcha would blend nicely with the lime flavor.
And what exactly makes this margarita “skinny”? Margaritas usually include an orange liqueur, typically Cointreau, which contribute a lot of sugar. Sometimes a little cane syrup is added as well. In this case, a bit of fresh squeezed orange juice gives that orange flavor with much less sugar. A little bit of stevia takes the edge off the tartness of the lime juice.
Here’s what I used:
Fresh lime juice tastes so much better than a store bought sours mix. The flavor is much fresher and brighter, and you’re getting all that vitamin C and antioxidants.
Fresh orange juice gives the orange flavor with less sugar than an orange liqueur.
Silver tequila…of course! Can’t make a margarita without tequila.
Mindful Matcha from Further Food is what gives this margarita a little twist. I like Mindful Matcha because it has a less grassy taste than most matcha. It also contains cordyceps mushroom, abhwagandha, ginger and wheatgrass, which I why I use it every day. (Usually in a matcha latte rather than a margarita!)
Liquid stevia is what I used to take the edge off the tartness of the lime juice. My favorite brand is NuNaturals because there is no weird bitterness or aftertaste.
Seltzer water was used to top off the drink…you just need a splash.
A lime wedge and a matcha salt rim make the perfect garnish.
Now that you are absolutely dying for a margarita, here’s the recipe!
skinny matcha margarita
one ounce fresh lime juice
one ounce fresh orange juice
one and a half ounces silver tequila
one quarter teaspoon Mindful Matcha
one half dropper liquid stevia
splash of seltzer water
lime wedge, coarse salt and additional Mindful Matcha for garnish
Combine a pinch of salt and a pinch of Mindful Matcha on a small plate.
Moisten the rim of the glass with the lime wedge and roll in the matcha salt combo. Carefully fill glass with ice. Hand on to that lime wedge…you’ll need it again!
Combine all ingredients except seltzer in a cocktail shaker, add ice, and shake until well combined.
Strain into glass over ice and add a splash of seltzer. Garnish with lime wedge and enjoy!
