If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I love coffee almost as much as I love Justin Bieber, black mascara, and wearing pleather.
Which is saying a lot.
But I also enjoy some chai from time to time.
Why chai?
Because it tastes amazing and has some real benefits.
Chai is tea (typically traditional black tea) that is blended with spices.
The blend always includes cardamom, and typically star anise, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper and ginger.
Not only are the spices delicious, they add to the nutritional value of the tea. Cardamom is a digestive aid that is also high in antioxidants. Cinnamon helps to regulate blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory, and black pepper has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
And don’t forget, black tea is high in polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. It is also said to boost the immune system.
The problem with chai is that most people enjoy it as a sugary chai latte.
At Starbucks, a grande chai latte contains 31 grams of sugar.
Now I’m not saying you should never have sugar, but sweetened drinks like this can really add to your daily intake. And sugar causes wrinkles. Ugh.
(For more on the issues with sugar, and the wrinkle connection, read this post: “Pour some sugar on me…” )
Since I want to enjoy a chai latte without all the sugar, I came up with a happy, healthy and hot chai latte. You get all the benefits of the tea and spices, plus some added bonuses from the other ingredients.
After brewing the chai, I blend it with coconut oil, collagen peptides, and usually a few drops of liquid stevia to sweeten.
The coconut oil makes for a creamy, frothy drink when blended. It also contributes healthy fats for glowing skin. The fat in coconut oil is easily burned and said to increase your energy levels. I love Thrive Market’s brand of coconut oil.
The collagen peptides help to firm up your skin and strengthen hair and nails. They also support weight loss and can reduce wrinkles and cellulite. What’s not to like? My favorite brand is Further Food, and you can always get 10% off with my code HAPPYHEALTHYANDHOT.
