Avoiding that Post-Vacation Slump
I just returned home from an amazing five days in Miami with my sister celebrating her 50th birthday. We did it all…beach walks, lounging by the pool, delicious meals, high end shopping and drinks in South Beach.
And we came back feeling amazing! Because I have figured out the secret to avoiding post-vacation slump!
So I’m sharing some tips that can help you to have an amazing vacation and not feel like shit when you get home:
Sleep: I can’t stress enough the importance of sleep. Whenever possible stick to a sleep schedule similar to what you are used to. With any luck you can get a little more sleep while you’re on vacation. My sister and I are both naturally early risers, so we intentionally went out early and went to bed early. Drinks at the Versace Mansion are just as much fun at 7 pm as they are at 11 pm!
Hydrate: With the heat, humidity and increased alcohol consumption, hydration is crucial. We made sure to have huge water bottles with us at all times. We mixed it up with spring water and different mineral waters to keep things interesting.
Supplement: Vacation certainly isn’t the time to add new products to your routine, but I do believe in sticking with what you are regularly supplementing with if you’re away for more than a day or two. I packed Vanilla Collagen Peptides from Further Food…the added Tremella mushroom does wonders for your skin! We took Ashwagandha capsules (also from Further Food) for stress relief. I also packed my instant mushroom coffee from Four Sigmatic. So easy to make with the hot water from the in room coffee maker, and it’s amazing for focus and concentration.
Snack on protein: Keeping some simple protein snacks in the room can keep you from getting hangry (especially when you’ve just come in from the pool but won’t be eating dinner for hours!) Nuts are a great option since they don’t require refrigeration, but make sure you are aware of how much you’re consuming. A typical serving size is 1/4 cup (about a handful.) If you have a little fridge in the room deli meat can be a great option as well.
Ask for what you want: We both eat very clean and low carb. No grains and little dairy. We found it really easy to stick to this on vacation. You just have to ask for what you want. An omelet without toast or potatoes. Salads with added protein and extra avocado. A burger without the bun, sub a salad for the fries. It’s easy!
When you drink: Skip the sugary mixers! Giant frozen drinks in fish bowls are never a good idea. I can’t stress this enough. And don’t mix…if you start the evening with wine, stick with wine. Stay hydrated and pace yourself. It’s not worth it to feel like crap in the morning. Ever.
Before bed: We took two supplements before bed that are game changers, especially when you travel. Magnesium capsules (we like Life Extension brand) help you relax and sleep AND help you stay regular. We all know this can be a huge problem when we travel. The other supplement is activated charcoal. Before bed take one capsule per alcoholic beverage to help absorb the toxins.
We all love a good vacation getaway. Now you don’t have to dread that post-vacation slump!
Hope this helps you make your next trip happy, healthy and hot!
