I’ve talked in the past about this concept…being the girl on the other side.
It’s about seeing yourself as already reaching your goals…feeling how good it will feel to be there. And then just acting as if you’re already there. It doesn’t matter what the goals are…health, relationship, career…it’s all good!
I had a laundry list of tedious administrative tasks hanging over my head. Paperwork and phone calls, none of the fun. And the longer I put them off, the more they were draining my energy.
Until one morning, after my quiet meditative time, I thought about how great it would feel to finally get them done. And that morning I knocked every single one of those tasks off.
And it felt sooooo good! Even better than I had imagined. In fact, I was so energized that I did some decluttering. So I cleared up mental and physical space and felt so happy and free. I was amazed at what a difference something so simple could make.
Which got me thinking about being the girl on the other side. Sometimes the other side feels really far away.
Let’s use weight loss as an example.
Say you have a goal of losing 25 pounds. You’ve thought about how amazing you will feel when you reach that goal. You’ll feel lighter and energized. It will be so much fun to clear out your closet and purchase some new clothes for your new body.
But losing 25 pounds isn’t going to happen overnight. Or in a week. Or even a month.
So while you never want to lose sight of that vision, you can create some smaller visions as well. Like thinking about how great it’s going to feel when you complete your ass and abs workout today. Or how good you’re going to feel waking up tomorrow morning when you ate well today.
Remember, this works for all kinds of goals. Not just health goals.
By looking at the shorter term, you’ll get to feel that feeling over and over. You’ll learn that you can count on yourself. And that’s when the momentum starts to build.
One more thing to share, as we’re talking about stepping into the feeling of being the girl on the other side, is to get specific on the details.
Let’s take a different example…a financial goal. Instead of just focusing on having a certain income, think about how that will feel. How will you feel when you see the money deposited in your bank account? How great will it be to treat yourself and your loved ones to something special?
When you truly focus on how it will feel to be the girl on the other side, you step into her now.
