is the perfect summer adult beverage…..just like “Despacito” is the perfect summer song. At least in my little world. “Strip that down” by Liam Payne and Quavo is up there too.
I love the concept of sangria…wine, fresh fruit and few other ingredients. But whenever I order it out, it’s usually too sweet for my taste. And most of the recipes I come across end up calling for lots of added sugar or even some soda to top it off.
Since I wanted to come up with a summer drink that was totally happy, healthy and hot, I decided to improvise.
Here’s what I used:A dry red wine is the base of this sangria. The original sangria from Spain was always made with red wine. Red wine can be a decent source of many antioxidants. Unfortunately most of the wines sold in the US are loaded with sulfites and other additives that aren’t doing us any favors. Dry Farm Wines is an amazing company that delivers organic, sugar free European wines to your door. Doesn’t get much better than that. These wines are so low in sugar that they are compatible with Primal, Keto and Bulletproof lifestyles.
Berries add flavor and a natural sweetness. I used a mix of blueberries, raspberries and strawberries but feel free to change it up. Berries are a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants for glowing skin. Kombucha is the surprise ingredient here. It adds a nice flavor and a bit of carbonation. If you have good local kombucha, use that. If you’re making it yourself, you are a total badass. Send some my way! My favorite brand that is readily available is GT’s, for its flavor and low sugar content. Kombucha is a great source of probiotics, which are awesome for your skin and your digestion.
Not familiar with kombucha? It’s black tea that has been heavily sweetened and fermented. The fermentation process uses up much of the sugar.
Most traditional sangrias include a touch of brandy. I left that out simply because I didn’t want any more alcohol in the drink. And it’s not something I have on hand. But if you want to add a shot of brandy, have at it!
This was so good, and I’m already excited about some other flavor combos that will be fun and seasonal. Not everything makes it to this website…follow me on Instagram @resnickelizabeth to see what else I come up with!
So here’s the actual recipe…always feel free to improvise:
happy, healthy and hot summer berry sangria
three cups mixed berries…I used about one cup each of raspberries, blueberries and sliced strawberries
one bottle dry red wine
one 16 ounce bottle berry flavored kombucha
Put the berries in a large pitcher and add the wine. Let chill for at least four hours for the flavors to blend. Add kombucha and enjoy!
If you are not serving it all at once, don’t add the kombucha right away. Just wait until you’re ready to serve and top each glass with kombucha.
So can this simple sangria recipe help you feel happy, healthy and hot? Oh yeah!
You will be happy enjoying a refreshing drink on a summer day. The ingredients are surprisingly healthy, providing antioxidants, vitamin C and probiotics that support healthy glowing skin. It’s also low in sugar, so it works with just about any plan you may be following to stay fit. And a happy girl with glowing skin and a fit body is always hot!
