Yes, there is such a thing! Starting your morning off with some healthy habits will not only make you feel great, it sets the tone for the rest of your day.
So I’m going to give you a quick run down of my morning routine. I’m not telling you to do everything I do. But maybe you’ll see something here you want to try!
The minute I wake up, I put a blob (maybe a teaspoon) of coconut oil in my mouth. Oil pulling sounds gross, but can have some wonderful benefits. Basically you swish coconut oil around in your mouth for 5-20 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with warm water, and brush. It is supposed to pull toxins out through our gums and cut through plaque. Some people notice health improvements like reduced sinus pressure and better immunity. Personally, I have noticed that my teeth feel smoother and cleaner, and definitely stay whiter, when I do it consistently. I have also noticed lately that my sinuses feel very clear. Hey, oil pulling is not for everyone. I get it! But if you want to learn more, here’s the post I did on it a few months ago: Believe it or not, I go through this tub pretty quickly
You know I love my lemon water. My 103 year old grandmother had the right idea with this lemon thing! I follow the oil pulling with a tall glass of room temperature water that has a fresh lemon (or lime!) half squeezed in. The tart taste totally wakes me up, and of course it’s very hydrating. The vitamin C supports collagen production, which is so important for firm skin. One of my very first posts was on lemon water: Why I start my day with lemon water
Next, I make my coffee. I’ve mentioned this coffee in tons of posts…I blend in coconut oil, ghee, and grass-fed collagen. So good and amazing for your skin! And I love my Bodum French Press!
While I drink my coffee, I have some much needed quiet time. It’s great to get your head straight before the day gets crazy. Personally, I like to do breathing exercises, have some prayer/meditation time, and take a few minutes to read something positive and uplifting. As much as it’s tempting to check email and FB, I do this first!
I like to squeeze in a mini workout, something that only takes a few minutes, so I can fit it in to the busiest day. Currently it consists of push-ups, crunches and squats on my bosu balance trainer, which I am in love with. If I could only have one piece of exercise equipment, this would be it. I’ve been using it for years now. I might do part of this while the water is heating for my coffee, and finish up the squats before I hop in the shower.
Another thing I do before I shower, is to take a minute or two to use a dry brush all over my body. This increases circulation, stimulates lymphatic flow (which is how your body removes toxins) and gets rid of dead skin cells. It feels great, and I did not have dry lizard skin on my legs all winter! I highly recommend the dry brush in my amazon store. It has natural bristles and a long wooden handle, and is a great price. Once you start dry brushing you will be addicted! Here’s the post I wrote about it back in November: Why I dry brush (and why you should too!)
Another little comment…as much as I love my music, I don’t listen to anything first thing in the morning. I really enjoy the quiet, reflective time before I head out into the world. But of course when I get in my car, the first thing I do is start blasting the music…Pitbull, Jason Derulo and Justin Bieber are keeping me company the rest of the day!
This may sound like a lot, but it’s just a part of my routine and I do it all pretty quickly. I’d love to hear from you…how are you making your mornings happy, healthy and hot?
