It passed with flying colors!

 

What’s that you ask?  Urban Decay’s waterproof mascara, called Cannonball.  I’ve really been putting it to the test here in Mexico, with kayak races, lots of beach and pool time, and my favorite pool game, Magic Carpet, where you are running across the water on an extremely long yoga mat, and of course eventually fall in.  Multiple times.

Now why is your favorite health blogger (I am your favorite, right?!) testing out Urban Decay mascara?  It’s not known to be a natural brand.

That’s right, it’s not.  But I have always loved this brand, both for its performance and the entertaining, sometimes naughty names.  And I was pleasantly surprised to find that some of their products, including this mascara, have a low rating from the Environmental Working Group.  The EWG rates cosmetics on a scale of 1-10 in terms of potential toxicity.  Cannonball has a rating of 2, which is actually lower than Tarte’s waterproof mascara called Lights, Camera, Splashes!  (For more on mascara, see I get drawn in by the naughty names.)

So here’s what I love about Cannonball…it has proved to be extremely long lasting, making it through long, hot, humid days without smudging, flaking or getting in my eyes.  For me (and probably many of us who went to high school in the 80’s) the gold standard of waterproof mascara will always be Covergirl’s Marathon Mascara, in the green tube, that has sadly been discontinued.  Cannonball has been holding up just as well.

What else do I love about Cannonball?  I like really dark, black lashes, and this delivers.  My lashes also feel surprisingly soft, which is not usually the case with waterproof mascara.  Tarte’s waterproof mascara stays on well too, but makes my lashes feel stiff and brittle.  And I have no trouble getting it off when I was my face with coconut oil at night.  If you are just using a water-base cleanser it probably would not come off so easily, though.

So, can Cannonball mascara help you feel happy, healthy and hot?  Well, I have been pretty happy that my mascara is not smeared under my eyes, which can easily happen during a day of pool games.  As far as healthy, it would be best not to wear any mascara, but I just can’t bring myself to do that!  But this has a low rating for toxicity from the EWG, so that is good enough for me.  And I think long, dark lashes are always hot!

I’d love to hear from you!  Have you found a more natural mascara that is actually waterproof?  I have tried the mascara from 100 percent pure, which had the best ingredients and was nice and dark.  While it stayed on well during a typical day, it is not actually waterproof.  If anyone has any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!  Until then, I’ll stick to Urban Decay’s Cannonball when I am at the pool or beach.
